AMMO GUIDE:
For a full season, each member of the team will need roughly 120 to 150 boxes (25 rounds per box) of ammo to finish the year. This assumes they will make every practice and meet plus Doniphan.
Please take advantage of the team shell sale if you have less than this on hand.
Ammo can be very confusing – if you see ammo for sale at a retailer, keep these thoughts in mind.
The “standard – basic” trap load is 1 1/8 ounce of #7 ½ shot at 1,200 fps. Depending on the manufacturer, they may be labeled as 3-dram equivalent loads. These shells can be used on any and all of the targets we will see in a season. Many shooters prefer to shoot one ammo type at each and every target.
Some shooters prefer to shoot a slower, lighter recoil load at the 16-yard line. Those would be 1,145 fps and are 2 ¾ dram equivalent.
Some shooters may prefer to a faster, higher recoil load for long handicaps. Those would be 1,250 fps or 3 ¼ dram equivalent.
Some shooters prefer to shoot a #8 shot shell at the 16-yard line, simply more pellets in the air.
There are 1-ounce loads which are low recoil. However, each shell will have fewer pellets. Beware of them if you are shooting a semi-auto, your gun may not cycle properly. Some shooters practice with 1-ounce loads and compete with 1 1/8 ounce shells.
We do not recommend 7/8-ounce loads for trap. They are not very common. They may be fine for practice but throw less shot downrange at the target.
FYI – our conference has rules re: what ammo is allowed:
1 1/8 ounce of shot, no faster than 1290 fps
1 ounce of shot, no faster than 1325 fps
7/8 ounce of shot, no faster than 1350 fps
Shot size should be 7.5 or 8
No copperized or nickel-plated shot.
